PEOPLE, LAND, AND HERITAGE

The community of Deir El Ahmar is an active and creative one wherein both men and women contribute to its growth in various or varied developmental spheres. The citizens of Deir El Ahmar are characterized by the unique bond they have with their land, their hospitable nature, and their passion for the preservation of customs and traditions of the area. Some of the challenges faced by the community include problems in the agricultural sector, as well as the limited job opportunities which result in the emigration of its youth. The association plays a major role in supporting the community by involving the youth and women of the area in the intricate process of creating sustainable development, enhancing the tourism sector, and developing the agricultural sector.

WADA CENTER

A TRUE RURAL EXPERIENCE: A SPACE FOR CONNECTING

With the help of local and international partners, the association was able to establish the WADA center, a space dedicated to sustainable rural development and the empowerment of local communities.

The center offers many services, some of which are:

• Raising awareness and providing training in the center’s halls which are equipped for symposiums, informatics, and workshops.
• Making and promoting local foods and products from the center’s kitchen, as well as mobilizing catering services inside and outside the center.
• Manufacturing local products (mouneh) in the specialized unit.
• Providing educational resources and a library with references on topics such as women’s issues, tourism, and environmental sustainability.
• Providing services and references for the development of tourism in the region.

AN ATTRACTION FOR RURAL TOURISM

The WADA center serves as a touristic attraction that provides visitors with the chance of experiencing life as a local by partaking in the following activities:

• Crafting artisanal handmade goods and products.
• Preparing and eating local dishes.
• Preparing local goods (mouneh) and purchasing them.
• Learning traditional folk dances like dabkeh and poetry recitals (Ataba).
• Visiting the photographical, cultural, and historical exhibitions at the center that also feature a showing of historic agricultural tools.
• Providing access to touristic information such as the annual tourist calendar, and various tourism programs.
• The center also provides transportation services, as well as accommodation, food, and more with the help of local tour guides.

AN ATTRACTION FOR AGRO-TOURISM

WADA has also acquired additional space in order to develop the following agro-touristic activities:

• A specialized facility to train farmers and visitors in various agricultural techniques and assist them in harvest seasons.
• A market space for farmers to display and sell their products.
• A garden for families, to be used mainly for picnics and local festivals.
• Five bungalow units that can provide accommodation for visitors and those participating in activities.

La société de Deir El Ahmar est active et créative; ses hommes et ses femmes contribuent à la vitalité de leur région. Ils se distinguent par leur attachement à leur terre, leur bonté et leur hospitalité, et tiennent à la préservation de leurs moeurs et coutumes. Néanmoins, ils font face à de nombreux défis dont les problèmes agricoles et la rareté des opportunités de travail pour les jeunes qui les poussent souvent à émigrer. L’Association assume un rôle important dans le soutien de cette communauté; elle favorise la participation des femmes et des jeunes au processus du développement durable ainsi qu’au progrès du secteur touristique et agricole.

UN ESPACE DE RENCONTRE ET DE DÉVELOPPEMENT

Grâce au soutien de différents partenaires nationaux et internationaux, WADA a instauré un Centre de développement durable de la vie rurale, au service des sociétés locales en vue de renforcer leurs capacités.

Services offerts

• Information et formation dans les salles du Centre équipées pour les conférences, l’informatique et les travaux manuels.
• Sauvegarde du patrimoine culinaire local: préparation et promotion de plats traditionnels dans la cuisine de WADA pour répondre aux commandes de l’intérieur et de l’extérieur du Centre.
• Elaboration de la «mouneh» locale dans un espace équipé dans ce but.
• Diffusion du savoir: bibliothèque dotée d’ouvrages sur la condition de la femme, le tourisme et l’environnement.
• Sensibilisation et éducation à l’importance de l’environnement au Centre et dans le jardin-modèle qui l’entoure.
• Services et études conçus pour favoriser les progrès du tourisme dans la région.

UN CENTRE D’ATTRACTION POUR LE TOURISME RURAL

Le Centre de WADA est un lieu d’attraction touristique qui offre aux visiteurs la chance d’expérimenter la vie rurale à travers la participation avec les habitants à plusieurs activités:

• Elaboration de travaux manuels et pratique de métiers traditionnels.
• Cuisine et dégustation de plats locaux.
• Préparation et vente de la «mouneh».
• Apprentissage de la danse populaire, la Dabké traditionnelle, et de la poésie lyrique «Al ataba».
• Visite de l’exposition de photos et d’outils agricoles anciens.
• Mise à la disposition des visiteurs des informations, calendriers et programmes touristiques divers.
• Assurance des services de transport, logement, restauration et communication avec les guides touristiques de la région.

UN CENTRE D’ATTRACTION POUR L’AGRO-TOURISME

L’Association a consacré un espace annexe à son Centre principal aux activités d’agro-tourisme, cet espace comprend:

• Un service de formation aux activités agricoles en vue de participer avec les agriculteurs aux saisons des cueillettes.
• Un marché pour l’étalage et la vente des produits agricoles locaux.
• Un jardin de famille, lieu idéal pour les pique-niques, animé par la musique et les danses de la région.
• Cinq bungalows pour l’hébergement des touristes et des participants aux activités et programmes divers.
